The Town Hall of Cuevas del Almanzora is located to the northeast of the province of Almeria and has an area of 263 sq.km , bordering at South and West on the municipalities of Vera and Antas; at North on those of Huercal-Overa and Pulpí; and at East on the Mediterranean sea along 14 kilometres of coast.
The Almanzora, the longest of the Almeria rivers, crosses Cuevas del Almanzora, from Sierra de Almagro, small mountainous chain located al the northwest, in which is the hill Cucharon, that it elevates our Maxima height until the 711 meters. Following the coast, we found the mythical and long ago rich Sierra Almagrera, mountain little elevated that is chained towards the north with those of Castillaricos and Los Pinos.
The Cuevas city welcomed the rowing and canoe kayak in the Mediterranean Games Almeria 2005. These activities took place in a canal existing on Cuevas del Almanzora and adapted by this end. The Canal for flat water racing in Cuevas Almanzora, with a length of 1,300 metres and a width of 120 metres, is a top level competition area. These facilities were constructed to hold the Canoe Kayak and Rowing events for these Games of Almería 2005. For this, a special canal was built, based on a project of environmental adjustment, which depicts the zone as an important recreation and sports area.
The privileged location and the proximity to the coast have made of this city a local economic and trade centre. If we add to this the times of splendour during the mining of the Sierra Almagrera we can comprehend that we are in a town with a great deal of history in its streets and houses, as seen in the castle, the Town Hall or the house of the poet Sotomayor.
Those who visit this region will appreciate its fertile valleys that come from Moorish times; Moorish people were the first ones who cultivated them, where the traditional agriculture of irrigated land mixed with modern irrigation techniques. Thanks to the construction of the Almanzora marsh and irrigation infrastructures, this municipality is being transformed into one of the main centres of agricultural development of the province.
One of the great attractions in Cuevas del Almanzora is its beaches: a stroll by the coastal side shows how it is possible to find along 14 km calm and open beaches, in contrast to trimmed and steep beaches that are hidden behind the mountainous bulks that join in the same sea.
At the present time, the region has know to joint the traditional enchantment of his history with an increasing tourist development.
